Gastroesophageal Reflux in Chilhood

Abstract
Sliding esophageal hiatal hernia is a common disorder in infants and children and gastro esophageal reflux is frequently associated with this type of anatomic disorders. The resultant reflux of gastric juice leads to symptoms and the pathologic changes in the esophagus.
In the last few years, there has been an increased interest in gastroesophageal reflux in children and it became apparent that gastroesophageal reflux, not hiatal hernia, was the primary cause of pertinent symptoms and the focus of therapeutic intervention was shifted from repair of hiatal hernia to antireflux operation.
And now it is obvious that improved radiologic techniques and increasing clinical awareness improved the accuracy in diagnosis of this common disorder in infancy and childhood.
We experienced 4 cases of childhood gastroesophageal ref lux and managed with Nissen fundoplication in Yonsei Medical Center recently and the results were as follows:
1) The sex distribution was equal and 3 cases were below 1 year old and their chicf complaints were vomiting in 3 cases and anemia in 1 case.
2) Esophagogram was taken as diagnostic measure in all cases and revealed gastroesophageal reflux and combined sliding hiatal hernia.
3) Nissen fundoplication was carried out in all cases and postoperative courses were uneventful.
